Obituary for Sonia A. Schempp (Hischynsky)

Sonia A. Schempp, 82, of Syracuse, NY, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family, on March 14, 2021. Sonia was born, raised and educated in Montreal, Quebec, Canada moving to the United States in 1959. She was the daughter of Mary and Stephan Hischynsky.

Sonia was an accomplished artist. She chose not to sell her work, rather to display in her home and offer to family and friends. You will also find her artwork displayed in some local medical and dental offices at their request. Sonia volunteered as a docent for many years at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, New York.

Sonia spoke fluent French and Ukranian. This allowed her to assist Ukranian families, new to the area, adjust to life in the United States.

Sonia is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Brig. General Paul A. Schempp. Also survived by her two daughters Kathy (Gary) Wenner of Liverpool, New York and Sylvia Heppler-Bates ( Bill) of Liverpool, New York; Grandchildren Chelsea Wenner, Greg Wenner, Stephanie Heppler and Joseph Heppler: Great grand children Grace Elizabeth and pre-deceased by Faith Margaret.

Sonia and her husband were able to travel extensively and she particularly enjoyed trips to London, Paris, Rome, Stuttgart, Venice, Cairo and Luxor.

Most importantly Sonia was devoted to her family as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She always wanted the best in life for all of them. She was also sensitive to the lives of both wildlife and domestic animals and was devoted to her two current cats Alexis and Polly. In the opinion of the family, Sonia’s many talents, outgoing personality, and her devotion made this world a better place.

At her request there will only be a grave side service at Pine Plains Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Contributions in her memory can be made to CNY SPCA, 5878 E. Molloy Rd, Syracuse, NY 13211, Humane Association CNY, 4915 W. Taft Rd., Liverpool, NY 13088 or favorite charity.
