Obituary for Mary Anne Tappan (Glanville)

Mary Anne Tappan, 86, of Phoenix, NY, died on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Iroquois Nursing Home, town of Onondaga. She was born in Syracuse, NY to her late parents, Marjorie Hitch Glanville and Joseph Tallcot Glanville on April 12, 1931. Her mother, a Laurel, DE native and her father, a Skaneateles native had met in NYC while working during the mid 1920s. Joseph later bought the Fanchier Funeral Home in the hamlet of Jacksonville and moved the business to the hamlet of Lysander where she resided in her youth. She was a graduate of Baldwinsville Academy, class of 1948. Mary Anne attended Sullins Methodist College in Bristol, VA for one year. She worked at Sparhawk Hall in Ogunquit, Maine for a season. Later, she worked for an insurance company and then at General Electric Co., Syracuse.

Mary Anne was a homemaker and loving and devoted wife and mother. She had been an officer in the AGT funeral home corporation during most of her marriage to Gordon. A member of the First Congregational Church, Phoenix, where she sang in the choir, active in Women's Fellowship. Mary Anne sang in the Pennellville Church Cantata for several years. She loved to travel, especially in her middle years. Mary Anne was a former member of the Eastern Star #144, a day camp director for Camp Fire Girls at Camp Talooli, Pennellville, Topics Club, and Century Club.

Surviving are her loving husband of nearly 65 years, Gordon C. Tappan; son Douglas G. (Lisa) Tappan of Baldwinsville, daughter Saralyn E. "Sunny" (David) Van Auken of Clay, son Charles J. "Chick" Tappan of Phoenix (Patti Young); four grandchildren, Tricia Anne Van Auken of Rochester, Janine Marie (Paul) Sabo of Madison, MS, Geoffrey D. Tappan of Baldwinsville (Bridget Burnett), Elissa Rose Tappan of Baldwinsville; two great-grandchildren; Dylan Sabo and Emily Sabo; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

We thank the staff at Iroquois Nursing Home for the care they provided Mary Anne during her time spent there.

Calling hours are on Sunday, April 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. and Monday, May 1 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Allanson-Glanville-Tappan Funeral Home, 431 Main St., Phoenix, NY 13135. Services are on Tuesday, May 2, at 10:30 a.m. in the First Congregational, UCC Church, 43 Bridge St., Phoenix, NY with Pastors Karen Marshall and Stan Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, 70 Tappan St., Baldwinsville, NY.
