Obituary for Margery G. Bracco (Green)

Margery Green Bracco, age 95, of Phoenix, NY, passed away peacefully at home on
February 8, 2023 after a long illness. Marge was born on September 3, 1927 to Floyd L.
and Elsie (Denike) Green in Newark, New Jersey. Raised in Liberty, Campbell Hall, and
Rock Tavern, New York, Marge graduated from Washingtonville High School in 1945 as
salutatorian of her class, and was a member of the Junior Nurse Corps. She trained as a
nurse at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie. Following the death of her husband,
Marge obtained her associates degree from Orange County Community College and was
licensed as a Registered Nurse in 1960. While raising her four young children on her
own, she worked at the Goshen Hospital before being actively recruited by Orange
County Community College as a nursing professional to provide care to its students.
While in this position, Marge helped design the student health facility, and also
developed protocols for student care that were well-regarded by her peers in similar
college health positions across New York State. Upon retiring from O.C.C.C. in 1979,
she moved to the Syracuse area and worked at the former Castle Rest Nursing Home until
1990. After her life’s labors, Marge volunteered in her community for RSVP of Oswego
County delivering Meals on Wheels. She also enjoyed nature, gardening, sewing,
knitting and designing dollhouse furnishings. She was a longtime member of the
Syracuse Area Miniature Enthusiasts. In her earlier years, Marge was active in 4-H, and
a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hamptonburgh where she served as a
Sunday School teacher and Superintendent. She was also a Girl Scout Leader, and Boy
Scout badge counselor in the Campbell Hall / Washingtonville area — although she
ruffled some feathers by being a woman in a “man’s” domain. Marge cherished her
family and in recent years enjoyed the company of her cat, Sir Thomas Sneakers.
Marge is survived by daughters Nancy Curtis of Camden, NY, Victoria Bracco of
Phoenix NY, son Michael (Judy) Bracco of Rock Tavern, NY, grandchildren Juli Knopp-
Walts (Jeffrey), Rachel Curtis, Matthew Bracco, Abby Bracco, great grandchildren
Kerriann Knopp, Ryan (Kim) Knopp, Chelsie Knopp (Brianna Grinnell), Jordan Knopp,
and great great grandson Brayden, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. She is
predeceased by her parents, her husband Victor J. Bracco, her sister Dorothy Green
Warth, her brother Robert Green and her son Stephen Bracco.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 18 at 10 AM followed by a service and
celebration of life at 11AM at the First Congregational United Church of Christ of
Phoenix, 43 Bridge Street, Phoenix, NY 13135. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations
may be made to the Salvation Army of Fulton. C/O Shawna Leigh, at 62. S. 1st
St., Fulton, NY 13064.
