Obituary for Margaret Madey (Mullen)
Margaret (Mullen) Madey, age 100, longtime resident of Phoenix, NY, passed away at Van Duyn Home and Hospital, on Monday Feb. 18, 2013 following a long illness.
Born on Apr. 24, 1912 in Phoenix, NY, she was the daughter of Mary “Mollie” Bresnahan Mullen and John Mullen. She spent her childhood in Phoenix graduating from Phoenix High School. Margaret the studied music at Syracuse University concentrating in piano. Later, she graduated from Oswego Normal School with a degree in Mathematics. She often taught in Mexico Schools as a substitute teacher. She then married Mitchell “Mickey” Madey at the St. Stephen’s Church in Phoenix. Margaret and Mickey ran a meat and grocery store for 12 years, called Madey Grocery in Oswego, NY. Eventually she moved back to Phoenix into the family home. Together, she and Mickey spent a few years remodeling the home themselves. They traveled often, driving to various parts of the country including the Southwest and New England States. Many a fourth of July was spent at Lake George with her sister Beth and brother- in-law Bernie. For several years Margaret and Mickey enjoyed square dancing with the local club. They were active members of St. Stephen’s Church, Phoenix, and Margaret attended Sunday mass every week until her health prevented her participation at church. Margaret was a lady of many talents and interests., She was an avid gardener throughout her life, tending a large backyard of heritage flowers, some were planted by her mother. A long time member of Century Club of Phoenix, some of the cuttings of the flowers would be nurtured by her to sell for the annual club fund raiser to benefit the Phoenix Public Library. The game of Bridge was another part of this organization and she had a passion for the game. Margaret belonged to many bowling leagues. Margaret delivered Meals on Wheels to people up to three times weekly. A solid citizen, she was committed to her church and community volunteering in many capacities. In later years, she substitute taught at Phoenix Central School as well.
Besides her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Mitchel J. Mickey Madey on Apr. 23, 1989; her sister, Julia Boulett. Surviving are her sister, Marion “Beth” Labourr of Hudson Falls, NY; her nieces and nephews and their spouses, Molly and Charles Carroll of Buffalo, Katherine and Dennis Moran of Scituate, MA, Judy and Robert Judge and John and Anne Labour all of Queensbury, NY, and Don and Lillian Labourr of Seattle, WA; and many close friends.
Calling hours are on Wednesday February 20 from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.. A prayer service offering with Deacon Frank Forish at 9:15 a.m. at the Allanson-Glanville-Tappan Funeral Home, 431 Main St., followed by a 10 a.m. church mass in St. Stephen’s Church, 469 Main St., both located in Phoenix. The Rev. Philip Brockmyre will officiated the mass. A spring burial will take place in Phoenix Rural Cemetery.
Margaret lived to enjoy the celebration of her 100 th birthday at the Van Duyn Home & Hospital. The Madey family wishes to thank the nurses and staff on Five West wing for their companionship and care of Margaret.
