Obituary for Gertrude Annie Converse

Gertrude Annie Converse, 97, of Phoenix, NY passed away on

Thursday Sept. 21, 2017 in Syracuse.  Born in Boston, MA on

Nov. 28, 1919 to her late parents, Walter G. and Ethel (Bigelow)

Crawford.  Attended Boston schools, graduating from Dorchester

High School, class of 1936.  Gert began working in a laundry;

Walter Baker Chocolate Co.; Sears Roebuck & Co., and S. A.

Woods Machine Co. as a bookeeper.  Married on April 3, 1943

to Frederick M. (Pete) Converse.  She was predeceased by

him on Dec. 2, 2009.

Gert leaves one son, Frederick P. (Chris) Converse; three

grandchildren Nancy (Thomas) Johnson, Susan Peters, and

Frederick L. (Sabrina) Converse; nine great-grandchildren;

three great-great grandchildren;  all of Phoenix; and four step-

grandchildren.

Served as Past Noble Grand of Azar Rebekah Lodge # 27,

Mattapan, MA a 54 year member.  Living in Springfield, MA

until 1963 when they moved to Clay, NY.  A member of Phoenix

Lioness Club1974 serving as secretary and then president.

Received Lioness of the Year-1975 from the Lions Club for her

involvement in the Horseshow.

In 1981 when Pete retired, they moved to Hinsdale, MA, their

summer home since 1946.  Transferred her Lioness member

ship to Hinsdale holding serveral positions.  She was heavily

involved with Hinsdale-Peru Sr. Citizens, Hinsdale C.O.A, a

23 year secretary for Skyview Grove Assoc. at Lake Ashmere,

receiving an award for service.

In 1995 Gert joined the new Lions Club which included

women receiving the 1998-99 Lion of the Year Award and the

Charles J. DeAngelus  Fellowship Award for Emergency Sight

& Hearing Treatment Memorial Foundation.  She worked Bingo

as well and attended 13 Lions International events one in Taiwan.

Once coming back to Phoenix in 2004, became active in the

Phoenix Lions Club as membership chairwoman and worked on

all projects up to a week ago.

Visiting hours are on Monday Sept. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. and

Tuesday the 26 th from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Allanson-Glanville-

Tappan Funeral Home, 431 Main St., Phoenix.  The funeral

service will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor Stan Bennett

officiating.  Burial will follow in Phoenix Rural Cemetery, 126

Chestnut St..
