Francis Alden "Fran" Barkley, 92, of Phoenix, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday February 12, 2023. Born in Massena, NY to his late parents, Vera Irene (Barkley) and Sanford Alden Barkley on March 9, 1930. He was a 1948 graduate of Massena High School where he was a competitive athlete in all sports. Fran was inducted into the Massena H. S. Sports Hall of Fame. He played semi-pro football for the Warriors. He worked at Homestead Dairies, Massena, NY in 1948, until 1949 where he enlisted in the U. S. Navy serving his country in the Korean War as an Electrician's Mate serving on the USS Philippine Sea Aircraft Carrier (CVA-47). On December 5, 1952 he was discharged and pursued a career in electrical work. He was an union electrician and member of IBEW Local 43, Clay, NY for many years until his retirement.
Moving to Phoenix, NY he and his wife Eileen raised their family. Becoming active in the Phoenix community, he joined the Enterprise Fire Co., 1, where he was a member for 58 years. Holding the various offices within the fire company, he became Chief from 1977-1979. Fran was past president of the Oswego County Fire Chiefs Association; member of its fire advisory board; NYS Fire Chiefs Association ; member of FASNY. He was a life member of Phoenix Memorial Post 5540, VFW. Fran was also very involved with the village of Phoenix, serving on the Village of Phoenix Planning Board as well as accepting the post as Code Officer and Building Inspector.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Eileen (Sharlow) Barkley in 2010; his brother Duane in 1996 and sister-in-law Onita (Schenk) in 2020.
Surviving are his son Jeffery A. and daughter-in-law Deborah Barkley of Phoenix, NY, daughter Cindy and son-in-law Larry Pealo of Ontario, NY, and son Scott and daughter-in-law Doreen of Syracuse; a sister Joan Donaldson of Zephyrhills, FL; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Calling hours are on Saturday March 18, 2023 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Phoenix Fire Station 1, 457 Main St., Phoenix, NY. Funeral service with fire fighter honors will be at 2 p.m. at the station. Rev. Jeff Hodge will officiate as well as fellow members participation under the leadership of Clark Sponable, funeral service coordinator.
Spring burial will be in Phoenix Rural Cemetery, 126 Chestnut St., Phoenix, NY with military rites from the U.S. Navy and VFW Post 5540 honor squad.
