Obituary for Evelyn R. Umstead Perry

Evelyn R. Umstead Perry, 93, of Phoenix, NY, passed away on Friday at Michaud Residential Health Services, Fulton. Born to her late parents, Eva L. (Pitcher) and Ray A.Quigg on April 1, 1923 in Fulton, NY. A graduate of Phoenix High School, class of 1940.


Many will remember the Phoenix Home Bakery on State Street that Eve and her husband Dick opened in 1954 until his death in 1978. Evelyn skillfully decorated hundreds of cakes and many still have a fond memory of their favorite donut.


She was a member of Phoenix United Methodist Church, Phoenix VFW Post 5540 Auxiliary and for several years volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Food Pantry at Phoenix Nutrition Site. She enjoyed her time as a tour guide for the Phoenix Sr. Citizens Group and crocheting blankets and cancer hats which were then donated to several organizations.


Evelyn was dearly loved and will be missed by her family and many who knew her.


Predeceased by her first husband, Richard F. Umstead in 1978; her second husband, William S. Perry in 1993; two sisters, Lillian V. Gristwood in 1997, and Letha L. Pelkey 2013; a brother Donald L. Quigg in 2007.


Surviving are her three daughters, Nancy J. (Ron) Hardter,

Linda S. (Tom) Bowersox, and Sandra L. Umstead all of

Phoenix; seven grandchildren, Ronald (Becky) Hardter,

Richard Hardter (Karen McKay), Laurie (Jeff) Lacey,

Kim (Jim) Sutliffe, Kristie (Scott) Shanahan, Stacy

Bowersox (Beau Sickler), and Casey (Chris) Ouzts;

many great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are on Monday Feb. 27, from 2 to 4 and

6 to 8 p.m. in the Allanson-Glanville-Tappan Funeral Home

431 Main St., Phoenix, NY. Services will be at 11 a.m.

on Tuesday in the funeral home with Pastor Sue Acker

officiating. Spring burial in Phoenix Rural Cemetery.
