Obituary for Anneliese H. Schlecht (Haas)

Anneliese Haas Schlecht, 94, of Phoenix NY and Grenell Island, NY. passed away Thursday, December 16, 2021. Born January 12, 1927 to Max O. and Louise (Emmert) Haas in Syracuse, NY., she was predecessed by her parents, her husband, Martin “Fred” Schlecht and her sister Eleanore Haas Gorman as well as her great grandson John Patrick Striplin-Griffith.

She is survived by daughter Elizabeth “Betty” Anne Ristau (David) of Clayton, NY, son Martin Frederick Schlecht (Martha) of Lexington, MA. and daughter Dorothy Jean Griffith (Rene Hemond) of Lancaster, MA. Also survived by a sister, Gerda Haas Balthasar (Robert) of Lebanon, PA as well as grandchildren Caroline Dawe Lussier, John Daniel Griffith, Jessica Mary Cannata, Sarah Louise Griffith, Lisa Anne Schlecht, and Derek Martin Schlecht. Anneliese was especially proud of her great grandchildren Evan Michael McGraw, Javier Martin Aguilar Schlecht and Oona Louise Striplin-Griffith. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins.

Anneliese was a graduate of Central High School in Syracuse and Syracuse University. While at Syracuse she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and active in many groups including the Lutheran Campus Ministry which she continued to be active with for the rest of her life.

Mrs. Schlecht taught math at Lincoln School in Syracuse for many years. She was an officer in the Syracuse Teachers Association and a member of the Math Teachers Association as well as the retired teachers group. In Phoenix she was a member of TOPS, Century Club, Topics Club, and the Schroeppel Historical Society. She was also a former member of the board of NEHDA in Syracuse.

Anneliese was active in the Lutheran Church all through her life attending St. Paul’s of Syracuse, St. John’s and St. Peter’s, First English Lutheran and most recently King of Kings in Liverpool. She also regularly attended the Grenell Island Chapel on Grenell Island where she had a beloved summer home. She often taught Sunday School and worked with many children’s programs.


Anneliese enjoyed her travels in Europe including several trips to see family in Germany. She also visited Japan, China, and Hong Kong. She loved cruises and took many in the Caribbean and a memorable cruise to Alaska. Her travels took her all over the US as well as much of Canada.

A memorial service will be held later in the spring. Burial will be private.
